Pds 1&4- Lenses! Continued.
Today we will be applying our study of literary lenses by working with the poem “Oranges” by Gary Soto. The assignment sheet is here and in Classroom.

Pd 2- Mango
Same as yesterday. 10-15 min of independent work, then Mango.

Pd 8- Workday. You need to use all of this time to complete some of the writing for your project.

Pds 1&4- Literary Lenses–>

Lenses- Imagine putting on blue tinted glasses. How would that change what you see? How about if you put on glasses that only have a tiny window to see out of? Think of the how things would look different. Literary lenses are a similar idea. By looking at a text through the lens, we see the meaning in a different way. Today we will be discussing the 8 lenses and applying some to Flies. Tomorrow we will be doing an activity using these lenses and a poem. Handouts are in Classroom.

Pd 2- The House on Mango Street–> Start with a few minutes to work quietly on Friday #28. Then begin reading Mango in the chapter titled “Chanclas”.

Pd 8- Night–> Pick up where we left off on Tuesday.



Tuesday 25 April- English 9

Pds 1&4- Lord of the Flies–> Literary term- An allegory is a story with more than one level of meaning—a literal level and one or more symbolic levels. An allegory allows a writer to tell a story about literal characters and to make a moral, religious, or political point. In the Lord of the Flies, the author makes direct comments on life and society through the use of allegory. Besides having a literal surface meaning, the events, settings or characters also stand for ideas or qualities and have a second meaning on that level. Golding reserves his allegory for certain aspects of society.

We will focus today on contrasts. There is an activity that will walk you through several contrasts in the book. You may work with a partner on this.

Pd 2- The House on Mango Street–> Today we will continue reading the chapters. Make sure you are taking excellent notes. We will be writing about this book later and good notes make it much easier.

Pds 1&4- Lord of the Flies
Start with a clip from the TV series LOST.

Character foils- In literature, a foil is a character that shows qualities that are in contrast with the qualities of another character with the objective to highlight the traits of the other character. The term foil, though generally being applied for a contrasting character, may also be used for any comparison that is drawn to portray a difference between two things. What we observe in literature very often is that a foil is a secondary character who contrasts with the major character to enhance the importance of the major character (source Literary Devices).

Start taking notice of how Jack and Ralph are developing as foils.

Page 34- How does this short interchange show characterization?

Beastie- What does this symbolize in society? Why do we need it?

What is the role of propaganda in a society?

Take notice of the struggle for leadership and Piggy’s role in it.

How does the contrast between responsibility and instant gratification begin to impact the events on the island?

What is the effect of the last sentence of the chapter?

Pds 1&4- Lord of the Flies Chapter 1
Backing up and getting a bit of historical context. 10 minute Google!

DICTION: the deliberate choice and arrangement of words to create a desired effect.
In Ralph’s eyes, the island is paradise; however the author gives some subtle descriptions that may show otherwise. What are at least two descriptions or items that show the island may not be totally idyllic? What specific words/phrases let the reader know this.

Go visual! Using the descriptions from Jack, Simon, and Ralph, formulate a rough sketch of what you think the island looks like. There are plenty of important landmarks to acknowledge. Go back into chapter 1 to find lots of descriptors to include on your group’s map.

Pd 8- On Friday we finished chapter 1 in Night. As we begin chapter 2, make predictions about what will happen.
