Regarding types and lengths of sentences…

Gary Provost on the Rhythms of Sentence Length

This sentence has five words. This is five words too. Five word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes when I am certain the reader is rested I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the symbols, and sounds that say listen to this, it is important.

Today we are looking at the synthesis prompt: student samples, scoring guide, and grader notes. Materials are in Classroom and on your tables.

Pds 1&4- Literary Lenses–>

Lenses- Imagine putting on blue tinted glasses. How would that change what you see? How about if you put on glasses that only have a tiny window to see out of? Think of the how things would look different. Literary lenses are a similar idea. By looking at a text through the lens, we see the meaning in a different way. Today we will be discussing the 8 lenses and applying some to Flies. Tomorrow we will be doing an activity using these lenses and a poem. Handouts are in Classroom.

Pd 2- The House on Mango Street–> Start with a few minutes to work quietly on Friday #28. Then begin reading Mango in the chapter titled “Chanclas”.

Pd 8- Night–> Pick up where we left off on Tuesday.

Wednesday 26 April- English 9

Today is a work day. My suggestion is that you spent the class period finding your short nonfiction pieces, writing about them, and starting on this week’s Friday writing.
